History of the project.
On March 8th, 2007 at the Moscow Youth Theater the artist and light-director Sergey Nazarov presented his project The Theater of Sand to the public for the first time.
The project was created as an idea of combination sand-painting and art of theater. Since then, The Theater of Sand performs independent sandy shows as well as performances in collaboration with different musicians and dance groups.
The art of sand-painting exists since ancient times. Nowadays with help of technical equipment and different modern devices it came up to the new level. The hands of the artist move sand over the surface of the illuminated glass, and the spectators can see magic show on the big screen. Pictures, overflowing one over another, form different stories.
Sand show - is the magic combination of colored sand, music and art of the Master, which attracts so magnetically both adults and children.

Interview with Sergei Nazarov
|
|
— Sergey, how did you get the idea of "Theater of Sand", and why the sand? — All my life, working in theater with scenery, I dreamed about ?live decorations?, the scenery, which can play an active role in the show, as actors themselves. And so I put my sand pictures with music, poetry, fire-show, the performance of ethnic dance. Sand ?is the element of earth, and we try to come up with such groups, which are also working with the elements.
— How the ideas of sand pictures usually born? — Mostly spontaneously. I create the plots for my pictures just when somebody wants me to. I am more than pleased to work with live music than records. And in this case we are not looking for musicians specifically ? sometimes we find artists on the streets.
— Do you usually carry your sand with you, or collect it in place for each performance? — Of course, I carry my sand, around 5 kilos. The sand from different places is absolutely different and you can work with it in different styles. Few days ago we worked with Moscow sand ? it is light-yellow, almost transparent. The sand from Egypt and other coastal states is quite different. When my friends are going to vacation, they always bring me a little sand as a gift from the places where they were. I already have sand from Spain, France, Egypt, Uzbekistan, India, Odessa. It differs in size of grains, the color, maybe even taste (I do not know, have not tried yet J).
— Have you had any funny stories with the sand? — Once we performed in Minsk, the show was excellent, and when we left, I felt that my bag is very lightweight. I thought that this is due to euphoria. ?A few days later we were supposed to perform in Moscow. As usual, we take the equipment, arrive at the event, set: ?and there is no sand! Spill somewhere in Minsk. Fortunately, we had reserves, so we had to quickly go and take them.
— Have you ever had any difficulties on the customs with sand transportation? — We do not, but my friend when she was taking me the sand from Uzbekistan, have not missed on the border. ?The border guards suspected: maybe there he is gold or the sand is radioactive. Once in Egypt one Frenchman tried to smuggle across the border two suitcases of sand. Customs officers questioned him for a long time about the purpose of sand using. In the end, everything became clear - the Frenchman produces an hourglass, and uses only the sand from the Sahara - it is considered the best.
— Where are the origins of this art form? — I became interested in the history not from the very beginning, already when I was interested in it. I know that the founder of the sand art is the woman from Canada. Somewhere in the 60s she began filming cartoons based on sand drawings. They are simple, but the technique itself is rather interesting. Even before the sand pictures were painted ?by monks in Tibet and China, but those pictures were static. Very well-known people who work in this direction now, are Ilana Yahav, Israel and Ferenc Chaco, Czechoslovakia.
